Youth
The Youth Program at Resurrection Lutheran Church consists of all students from grades 5-12. While some activities may be restricted to certain age groups: High School (9-12) and Middle School (5-8), many of our activities intentionally overlap both groups in order to build a broader sense of community.
Our Youth Program is centered on three key elements:
Sunday School -- Youth are divided into two age groups that meet at 9:30 on Sunday mornings during our education hour -- except in the summer, when they participate in the intergenerational Bible study.
Catechism Classes -- Catechesis (Instruction) is part of our Youth Program. The program runs for four years, typically beginning in the fall of a student's 5th grade year and concluding with Confirmation on Reformation Day of their 9th grade year. During the first two years, students are taught an Overview of the Bible and an Introduction to Church History. During the second two years, students study the six chief parts of Martin Luther's Small Catechism.
Because the purpose of our Youth programs is not only to learn what the Bible teaches, but also to apply those teachings in our day to day life and to serve others, these elements have been added to our Catechesis program. Youth are required to choose a mentor (often their parents or grandparents, but not exclusively family members) to work with them throughout the Catechesis program.
Youth are also taught service as part of our Catechesis program. About once a month, Youth are given an assignment to complete with the help of their mentor. In the past, they have: visited with some of the senior citizens in our congregation, attended a local concert, and prepared Christmas gift boxes for children in other parts of the world.
Catechesis classes meet on Wednesday nights during the school year from 6:30-8:00 pm. We begin in the Sanctuary for Family Worship at 6:30. Anyone is invited to attend the Family Worship Service.
Classes do not meet during the seasons of Advent and Lent. Youth are encouraged to worship with their families at these services. (Sermon notes are taken at Midweek Services.)
Preparation for Holy Communion -- Resurrection Lutheran Church practices Early Communion. Any youth (5th grade or older) who has shown a commitment to growing in their faith by enrolling in our Catechesis program may sign up to receive instruction in the Lord's Supper when they have spoken with their parents and both parties feel that they are ready. The youth should then inform the Pastor of their intention to attend the Preparation Classes. Classes are on Wednesday nights during Lent following the Midweek Service. Following this class, each youth will receive a brief questioning of their faith with the Pastor, their parents, and an Elder. First Communion will be at the Maundy Thursday Service.
Youth Activities -- There is a fellowship activity for youth planned at least once a month. Please check the church calendar under the "Connect" tab to see what is coming up!
